Vertical Saccades (Advanced)

In this tutorial, we will learn the neuroanatomy of vertical & torsional saccades. Key structures/terms: midbrain; pons; brainstem; rostral interstitial nuclei of the medial longitudinal fasciculus (riMLF); interstitial nuclei of Cajal (INC); oculomotor complex; trochlear nuclei; raphe interpositus in midline in the mid-pontine tegmentum -- lies in between the rootlets of the abducens nerves; riMLF comprises the excitatory burst neurons for vertical and torsional saccades; INC is the neural integrator for vertical and torsional saccades; the nucleus raphe interpositus contains the omnipause neurons for vertical and torsional saccades; INC or riMLF contains the inhibitory burst neurons for vertical and torsional saccades.
