Racoon Eyes (aka Panda Eyes (in the UK))
Bilateral Periorbital Ecchymosis
Bluish/Purplish hematologic discoloration in the upper and lower eyelids.
Causes
Facial soft tissue trauma (benign)
versus
Basilar skull fracture (
potentially lethal*).
Look for
Battle's sign
,
CSF Rhinnorhea
, and get skull imaging (Head CT).
versus
Neuroblastoma
Rare, but be on the look-out in kids who present with Racoon Eyes and NO antecedent trauma.
Battle's sign
Retroauricular ecchymosis (hematoma behind the ear)
CSF Rhinnorhea
CSF leakage from the nares.
Indicates a breach in blood/brain barrier and places patient at risk for
meningitis
.
